Without a doubt, the first and most important part of a rider's outfit is the motorcycle helmet. This topic is much more important and broader than it seems at first glance, which is why we will devote 4 parts to it, answering the most important question of all: what to look for when choosing a motorcycle helmet.
When choosing a motorcycle helmet, whatever the style, the most important thing is the right size. Choosing the right size of motorcycle helmet will make it much safer and more functional.
Motorcycle helmet sizes are divided in a similar way to clothing: XS, S, M and t.t. Each letter has a numerical expression, for example S is 55-56 cm. There are a few manufacturers in the world with slightly different numerical expressions, but this is a minority of manufacturers. Most manufacturers' sizes are the same, but it is still worth paying attention to the markings when choosing a helmet.
It is important to know that measuring the circumference of the head is not enough. The shape of the head should also be taken into account when choosing a helmet. Once the head circumference has been measured and the shape of the head is known, the next step is to find out whether the helmet you are choosing is unreduced and unenlarged. Some helmets come with a slight increase or decrease. Downsizing is usually for helmets with more than two outer shell sizes, while upsizing is for helmets with one outer shell size for all sizes from XS to XXL. One very common problem with single shell moto helmets is that after a certain period of time, they "sag" a lot, sometimes even increasing by one or one and a half sizes, which leads to a tabbing in the jowls, the head, the crown. In the next section, we will tell you why it is very dangerous and unwise to ride with helmets that are too big. In this situation, it doesn't really matter whether a motorcycle helmet costs €80 or €250 - if the helmet is the size of a single outer shell, it should be chosen very carefully and responsibly in the long run.
Another very important nuance: when measuring a motorcycle helmet, especially one with a single outer shell, don't be fooled by the comfort of the helmet, as there is a very good chance that the helmet will get much bigger after a thousand kilometres or after several washes of the inner lining. Our consultants can help you with this and any other questions you may have.
It is unfortunate, but we know from experience that more than half of all motorcyclists in Lithuania ride with helmets that are one size too big. There are also many who ride motorcycles with helmets two or three sizes too big. That's why we try to explain to each individual which helmet is best for them. Sometimes it's not just a matter of advising, but also of persuading, convincing or even arguing.
In the next sections, we'll tell you about the most common mistakes made when choosing a motorcycle helmet size. We'll answer why you shouldn't buy a helmet that's too big, and how to measure and choose the right helmet to put on your head (because you can easily do it all yourself).
